Today is Arba'een or the 40th day after martyrdom of Imam Hossein, the third Imam of Shia.
Many Iraqi shias walk rather than ride any vehicle. Many are barefoot as a mark of respect for the Chief of Martyrs. They hit themselves as an expression they are willing to suffer in his honour.
